6 September: I was surprised by the visit of Mr. Gebhard from New York; he had persevered there during the entire period of cholera but had also suffered some indispositions. Cholera was still present in that city, but of a far milder character. In the evening I was invited to the home of Bishop Anders, whose wife enjoyed the study of natural history and owned a small collection. He himself, a very lively little man, had formerly been a teacher at the institute in Neuwied; at the time when the French first came there as enemies, he had escaped. With great pleasure he recalled that period, during which he had had so many experiences.
